Warwick Saint

Knowing nothing about photography you might think would hinder a review of a photographer, but when the photographer in question is Warwick Saint that all seems to go out the window. Warwick Saint is an international photographer and director. He has worked on many advertising campaigns, film work, music artwork, beauty, fashion and celebrity shoots. And no matter how engrossed with photography you may be, you won’t have seen anything like him before.

A first click onto the Warwick Saint website reveals a sleek and professional portfolio. The vivid colours of the images set against the plain white background makes each photograph seem that much more fantastical. The gallery section of the website showcases his latest projects, the personal section; landscapes, holiday goers, celebrity shoots and nudes.

The nudes collection in my humble opinion is by far the cream of the crop. While most would try to turn the nude body into a work of art, Saint seems to regard it as just what it is, a body. The shots although some might say plain, are elegant. All in black and white the empahsis is on the body, without falling into worship. The models are, although beautiful, Not what you would expect, they are not hairless seemingly pre-pubescent twigs. But rather, real women, who even though meeting through a lens, its hard not to envy them, in the space of one photograph it is clear Saint has built up a repertoire with them.

If forced, my favorite picture from his portfolio is for me, again a nude. Untitled, it is photo 20 out of 20, a black and white bird’s eye view of a woman’s legs diving into a pool. Technically brilliant? I really couldn’t tell you. But is the most aesthetically pleasing thing I’ve seen in a long time, it is not in any way erotic, just strangely beautiful. The clean lines of the woman’s legs against the many ripples of the water create the most bizarre calming effect, a feeling ironically enough like slipping into a warm bath. I can think of no other nude photograph, painting or sculpture that I would be happy to have in my living room and invite my Grandmother to admire.
And that for me is the definition of Warwick Saint – admirable.
